HISTORICAL SIGNIFANCE
According to legends he was born as a monkey god to serve Lord Ram. He is true Karma who worked dynamically. He did what others could not do while serving Rama. He plunge with daring acts like crossing the ocean simply by uttering Ram-Nam, burning the city of Lanka, and bringing the sanjeevini herb and restoring Lakshmana to life again.
According to the legend, once Lord Hanuman saw Goddess Sita applying sindoor on her forehead. On seeing this, Lord Hanuman enquired from her the reason for applying Sindoor. Goddess Sita replied that this would ensure a long life for her husband. Hanuman then smeared his entire body with sindoor, in an effort to ensure Rama’s immortality. So on this day, devotees visit temples and apply tilak of sindoor to their foreheads from the Hanumans body as this is considered to be good luck.

He is seen as the embodiment of devotion and loyalty and is one of the rare Hindu god who has taken a vow of celibacy. He was born to (Wind-God) Kesari and Anjani. Hanuman became a legend mainly for his unflinching devotion and loyalty for Paramatma Lord Ram. He was an ideal karma yogi for his fearless, selfless service, humility and devotion for Lord Ram. Lord Hanuman is the only deity that cannot be troubled by negative energies. Hanuman Jayanti is an important festival of Hindus. Hanuman is the symbol of strength and energy. Hanuman is said to be able to assume any form at will, wield rocks, move mountains, dart through the air, seize the clouds and rival Garuda in swiftness of flight. He is worshipped in folk tradition as a deity with magical powers and the ability to conquer evil spirits. Also known as an avatara of Lord Rama, he is considered the God of power (Maruti).
On Hanuman Jayanti people observe fast, meditate on him and his Lord Rama, practice charity, read the Hanuman Chalisa and spend the day in repeating his glories and adventures and be blessed
Hanuman Jayanti is considered very auspicious for wrestlers and bodybuilders. On this day, they fast from morning till night. Bodybuilding and wrestling competitions are organised in Indian villages. They assemble at the wrestling field after paying obeisance to Lord Hanuman. They begin their fight after both the wrestlers shouts ‘Jai Hanuman’. Attractive cash prizes are awarded to the winner.

The Jain community celebrates the birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara, Vardhman Mahavir, the founder of Jainism. On Mahavir Jayanthi, Jain temples are decorated with flags. In the morning the idol of Mahavira is given a ceremonial bath called the ‘abhishek’. It is then placed in a cradle and carried in a procession around the neighbourhood. The devotees make offerings of milk, rice, fruit, incense, lamps and water to the Tirthankar. Pilgrims from all parts of the country visit the ancient Jain Temples at Girnar and Palitana in Gujarat on this day.
The birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara of the Jains, Vardhman Mahavir, the founder of Jainism, is celebrated by the Jain community in March. Born a prince in 599 BC, Mahavir renounced worldly life at the age of 30 and undertook austere penance until he achieved realisation.
He spread the message of salvation to the world and had many followers. Mahavir preached non-violence, prohibited any kind of killing and taught his followers to seek salvation through penance and abstinence. They are also advised to donate money, clothes and grain to the poor. The Jains are divided into many sects of whom the main ones are Digambaras and Shvetambaras with the latter again divided into Deravasis and Sthanakvasis.
