LONDON: Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Lancashire.
The 37-year-old Ganguly said that he was honoured and wants to build better ties with Lancashire.
“It is a huge honour. When I came to know about this a few months ago, I felt proud and I’m happy to be here. I have a long-term association with Lancashire – I had my first one-day international at Old Trafford 13 years ago and had a stint with Lancashire County Cricket Club,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by the Lancashire Evening Post.
“The best thing I remember about Lancashire was in April 2000 when I turned up with the temperature being 10 degrees. I was standing in the slips and couldn’t take my hands out of my pockets as it was so cold.
“Luckily, Michael Atherton asked me to go at mid-on where I put some hand warmers in my pockets and kept myself warm,” he added.
Dharma Kovvuri, university’s acting dean of its management faculty, says the institution wants to build on relations with India after setting up an office in Delhi in 2002.
“It’s a great honour for the university that we have been able to nominate Sourav and it’s great he has accepted. He has been a great ambassador for Indian cricket and as we all know, he has been the most successful Indian cricket captain and for him to accept the award from the university is a great honour for us,” he said.

London, July 16 (IANS) Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse’s marriage will end in a “quick divorce” Thursday.
Thesun.co.uk reports that Winehouse’s drug-ravaged husband Blake Fielder-Civil is asking for the divorce. The 27-year-old Fielder-Civil is claiming her adultery is the reason for the divorce. He may also seek a share in her estimated $17 million fortune.
During their 26-month marriage, the two plunged into heroin addiction that almost destroyed them both, although 25-year-old Winehouse saw her pop career soar.
Fielder-Civil, a video production assistant, was alleged to have fathered another woman’s child while in rehabilitation centre earlier this year.

Today on Tuesday July 15, actor Salman Khan shooting for the making video of his forthcoming film, Wanted, at the Mehboob Studios in Bandra, Mumbai, his girlfriend Katrina Kaif’s birthday on tomorrow and she is in London. So we wondered whether he would be flying to London tonight.
A source close to the controversial star however told us, “Salman is shooting today and tomorrow as well. It is very less likely that he would excuse himself out of professional commitments.”
Salman was trying to convince her till the last minute she left for London on Saturday but she had already made her mind to celebrate it with her family. This thing didn’t leave him too pleased. So maybe, that’s why he is not too enthusiastic of making a London trip, just for her birthday.”
Another insider belonging to his coterie reveals, “Salman had proposed a private party for Katrina for her birthday in Mumbai which would have guests only of her choice and it won’t be a repeat of anything like what it happened last year.
But well knowing the moody Khan you never know, he may just catch the first flight tomorrow morning and land at her doorstep.

London, July 12 (ANI): Late Michael Jackson had been popping a total of 55 different pills everyday in his final six months, according to reports.
The news came in line with the announcement that results of drug tests on the ‘Thriller’ singer’s brain and blood will be delayed further.
The decision was made after 28 prescription medicines were found at his rented mansion in LA, reports the Daily Star.
Drug Enforcement Agency officers have found dozens of bottles, boxes and bags of pills while searching the property in Holmby Hills where Jackson died.
Among other drugs they seized the highly dangerous surgical anaesthetic Propofol, which is legally available only to hospital patients and is administered via intravenous injection.
Propofol comes under the list of drugs found under the trade name Diprivan.
According to experts, without proper monitoring, the drug could lead to cardiac arrest -which ultimately caused Jackson’s death.
One LA-based doctor described the astonishing cache of drugs as a “guaranteed cocktail of death”.
It included the potent painkillers Demerol and OxyContin. (ANI)
